Being an Employee Owned Business

In 2019, I-COM became one of the first digital agencies in the North West - and the very first in Manchester - to become employee-owned. This decision was rooted in our commitment to fostering open communication, collaboration and team involvement in shaping the agency's future. By transitioning to an employee-owned structure, our employees now hold the majority stake in the business, aligning ownership with the collective effort that drives our success.

Under this ownership model, our team members, supported by experienced leadership and the trust board, have a decisive role in how I-COM operates. This shared responsibility cultivates a sense of pride in our achievements and reinforces a strong team spirit. For our clients, this means working with a team that’s personally invested in delivering exceptional results and building lasting partnerships - knowing that our collective success benefits not just the agency, but the individuals who own it.

“The talents of our people are what make us successful as a business. Historically, we’ve always given back some of our profits by way of bonuses, but the EOT makes this a formal commitment to our people.

“In today’s employment market where skilled people are in short supply, giving the team a stake in the company seems like the next logical step to take. We’re sure it will encourage engagement and focus the team on delivering even greater results for our clients.”

Ravi Bhalla, managing director and founder of I-COM

Meet Our Trustees

In an employee-owned business, trustees play a vital role in representing the interests of employee owners and ensuring the business operates in line with its values. They are appointed to oversee the Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), which holds the majority stake in the company on behalf of the employees. Acting as stewards, our trustees help safeguard the long-term success of the business while fostering a sense of shared accountability and collaboration among all employees.

“Even before I-COM became employee-owned, I always felt that the contribution I was making to I-COM mattered and made a difference. The company has always been great at recognising their employees' commitment and ensuring that people feel part of something. This meant that when we did become employee-owned, it felt very natural and reinforced how I had always felt about the business. On a personal level, I have felt very privileged to be appointed as a representative for the Trust and it's something I feel that my drive and determination make me a good fit for. It's empowering to be involved in big decisions that shape the business and see first-hand the impact that they have.”

Kate Smith, client services director

“Being part of an employee-owned business makes leadership more rewarding because success is something we achieve together. We’re all invested in I-COM’s future, driven by values like collaboration, accountability, and relentless improvement. This shared commitment not only strengthens us as a team but ensures we deliver innovative, results-driven solutions for our clients.”

David Walsh, director of technology solutions

"Being on the employee-owned trust board is a huge honour, it allows me to represent my colleagues and have a direct impact on shaping I-COM’s future. It’s rewarding to contribute to decisions that benefit both the team and the business. Together, we ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and valued."

Why Our Employee-Owned Model Matters to Our Clients

At I-COM, our employee-owned structure sets us apart from the typical agency model. Unlike many agencies where high staff turnover can disrupt client relationships, our team enjoys stability. More than half of our employees have been with us for over seven years. This continuity means our clients work with a team that truly understands their needs, saving them the time and effort of constantly re-educating new faces. It’s a commitment to consistency and quality that reflects our collective investment in delivering outstanding results.

Dedication to excellence

At I-COM, being employee-owned means our team is deeply invested in the work we deliver. Each project we take on benefits from our collective commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for our clients. With ownership comes accountability, and this translates into a focus on delivering results that go above and beyond expectations.

Reliability and long-term value

Employee ownership provides stability and ensures that our clients can rely on us for consistent, high-quality service over the long term. Our decisions are guided by what’s best for our clients and employees alike. This creates enduring partnerships built on trust, understanding and reliability.

Putting clients first

When employees are stakeholders in the business, client satisfaction becomes a shared priority. Our ownership model creates a culture where every member of the team takes personal pride in ensuring that our clients’ needs are met, their goals are understood, and their expectations are exceeded. As business owners ourselves we know how to think with a business mind and think commercially, which means we have that firsthand experience to understand how our clients work.

Why Employee Ownership Makes Us a Great Place to Work

As an EOT, I-COM is guided by principles of collaboration, responsibility and fairness. Our structure ensures that decisions are made with long-term sustainability and shared success in mind, aligning with our mission to deliver exceptional results for clients while creating a positive and inclusive workplace for employees.

At the heart of I-COM’s employee-owned model are our core values. These principles guide everything we do, from delivering outstanding client services to fostering a workplace where everyone feels supported and valued. This commitment to shared values ensures that our clients and employees alike experience the benefits of a truly collaborative, people-centred business model.
